Cairo!
We arrived in Cairo a few days go, the day before Ramadan, immersed instantly into its chaos, noise, and constant activity. Our hotel in Zamalek has a lap pool that is filled pre-dawn and late into the evening with children and teens doing their swim drills to the demanding barks of their coaches. We are learning to dart across beeping traffic to get from one place to another, and tolerate the dry heat during the day. We loved going to the museum in Tahrir Square to begin to grasp the history of this country, and wandered the small streets of a historical part of the city behind old city walls. We’ve had a lovely guide with us named Hahmed, who told us being with us reminded him of being at home, as he has 3 kids of similar ages.
There’s a lot to adjust to, with the intensity of the city, a very different culture and language, and the added element of Ramadan to the mix. It has been engaging, disorienting, and a lot to learn and absorb.
